What can a game clan accomplish without a castle? The answer is obvious nothing. Therefore, the main objective of any leader in a game world is to acquire a base of operations. Finding himself in exactly this position, High Shaman Mahan, leader of the Legends of Barliona, accepts an offer from the Emperor and the Dark Lord to vanquish the army of Phantoms that has inhabited Altameda, the phantom castle. However, this seemingly ordinary quest sets in motion such a momentous chain of events that the Shaman can do nothing but resort to his intuition and act on instinct. After all, a player who is being hunted by the three top clans of the continent at once can do little else....

The Phantom Castle Way of the Shaman Series Book 4 (Audible Audio Edition) Vasily Mahanenko Jonathan Yen Tantor Audio Books

This series is a well written story, revolving around a prisoner and focusing on how he interacts with the game and it's mechanics, as well as the people around him.

The story overall is very well done, it had me going from start to finish of all six books. I binge read them all over the course of a week, and greatly enjoyed every minute.

The writing is fairly well done too. The editing could use a little work (various mis-spellings and grammar mistakes, nothing major, and nothing that distracts from the story). The main writing issue I had throughout the series was at points it felt like it moved VERY quickly. I would get lost in my reading, and feel like I missed something, but upon going back and re-reading, simply found that it wasn't very well written out or described.

*****SPOILERS****** DO NOT READ BELOW BEFORE BOOK 6

The ending of the series felt VERY rushed. It wrapped up some stuff, while leaving others waaaay open. It was satisfying, but when you think more indepth on the book, it didn't close a lot of the circles that it started. It felt rushed. Very rushed.

The Phantom Castle Way of the Shaman Series Book 4 (Audible Audio Edition) Vasily Mahanenko Jonathan Yen Tantor Audio Books Reviews

This a great series in the genre. I am not a fan of cliff hanger endings but this is a fun read. The characters are engaging and the story line is big enough to where I am grudgingly able to shrug it off and look forward to the next book. This is a translation from Russian and my hat is off to them, well done! A few minor errors that I noticed but no big deal.
Another great Way of the Shaman book. Kept me engrossed the entire way. I will say that it does seem to be transitioning somewhat from pure litrpg to almost a more traditional epic fantasy. There is still some leveling notices and experience callouts, but they are almost in passing. However, the story kept me engaged enough that I didn't notice most of the time.
Sorry I haven't written a review yet! I've been finishing the books and moving immediately to the next until I finished this on and saw that book 5 doesn't come out till April. Gave me a chance to let everyone know that this series is really great. The translation and editing were very well done, I noticed one or two mistakes about every 100 words and they were very minor. Well worth the price but I still appreciated the free book 1 with prime membership! Hope to see more to come with this series! Thanks again!
too jumbled and erratic too be great. The shaman's story continues but its hectic and bounces back and forth a bit too much in this book. Also its becoming clear that everything is all about the MC. Literally the entire world and all the important characters both PC and NPC dance around the MC alone. Even if he doesn't seem to understand this time and time again it happens. I think that's actually my biggest grip about the series now. This guy can't sneeze without fouling up the world or alternately saving it. Its becoming more and more unbelievable. Also the snap judgements where he is alternately punished or rewarded by higher powers over and over and over again. Is he stripped of his powers or re-empowered changes literally from paragraph to paragraph at times.
Only the story propelled this book, which it is good when a story propels itself, but it still needs a good base to it. The small portion of reality that is attempted to be thrown in seems haphazard and last minute. Scenes seemed to flow onto one another rather than into one another making things confusing and hard to read at times. The story around the Legends of Barliona, and especially Mahan; Anastaria; and Plinto, was good, but not a whole lot else. While the action and scheming never stops, the character development fell flat, even while trying to deepen it.
This book is light years from the charming, quirky, engaging and slightly left field story from book #1... and #2... and slightly less so in #3... I so loved those books and they kept me going as the story has become more convoluted, wordy, self indulgent and unfortunately, less interesting. We want more skill learning, leveling up, finding new scenarios & quests and Mahan quirkiness! I know you've got it in you. -)
Firstly, I really don't know what some people are complaining about translation issues. I have no problems with understanding it, Read the sample and see for yourself. Secondly, about the book; I'd advise you re-read the 2nd book since it was soon long ago for me I forgot what the story was up to and you might get senile like me remembering stuff that happened.

Content wise I'd say it's not as fun as the 1st book since it's less of him adventuring and more dealing with issues as the clan head and I feel he's multitasking too many things while trying to reach the objective - the castle. Yes, I understand that when you start a clan you do need to manage it but I feel like he's doing too many tasks because of the new plots i.e. there's a new relationship for our Sharman, the secret behind the dragons, Thricinians and obstacles/ plot twists to the quests in this book.
Personally, I'm hoping to see how he deals with the increased threat from the bad guys in the next book. No, this is not really a bad review of the book as the story so far has been well written. I just personally like more action and levelling up and him gaining new skills that kind of thing. So I'd still get the next book when it comes out.
