When you live a life of secrets, you trust no one and question everything

Nineteen-year-old Bess Martin has many secrets. She can outride, outshoot, and outsmart most people, but her greatest secret...she is the leader of the Phantoms, a spy organization.

After spending three years fighting in a war, eighteen-year-old Jack Martin returns home to Philadelphia with his sister Bess, ready to live a life of ease, but what is waiting for them is a task more difficult than any other battle they have fought.

When people start disappearing and the weather turns unusually cold, the city is in a panic. They believe the war angered a deity and that the disappearances are the sacrifices, but who will be next? When presidential hopeful James Monroe is targeted, all clues lead to the mysterious secret society known as Levitas. It is up to Bess, Jack, and their team of Phantoms to uncover a dark and winding plot that reaches further than they could have ever imagined. As their journey draws them deep into secrets of the past, Bess and Jack may come to find that a normal life is not possible when you are a spy.

...it was hard to put down. Having said that, it was really hard to get into this one due to the multiple names and the lack of introduction to so many different characters. Plus, it felt like it couldn't decide what era it was supposed to be a part of for the longest time. Eventually, there was a more clear picture of what was going on and the time period in which this all happens. I'm really glad I stuck with it, but I can see where some might give up before getting to that point. This book does leave you with a cliffhanger, which I normally get frustrated over, but it wasn't so bad that you were left completely dangling on what is going to happen. I'm hoping the next book in the series picks up where this one leaves off. I would definitely continue reading this to see how the author develops the story and the main characters.

Phantoms In Philadelphia Phantom Knights Book 1 eBook Amalie Vantana Reviews

I'm so glad that I decided to read this book. Amalie Vantana has woven an exciting adventure/romance with twists like a screw spiraling through this tale of post Revolutionary War Philadelphia and Washington with spies, secret society's and good old intrigue. There are heroes and heroines, there are two prevalent for this book and two more that will continue for the sequel, both are equally fascinating with their own particular quirks. Now, that the couple from Philly is happily settled, I'll be settling in to check on that group that travelled south to Charleston to be part of the Sequel, t.t.f.n..
This book has more than one character telling the story so sometimes I had to remember who was speaking in each chapter and it made it harder to follow but once I got the hang of it, it was great! I had wanted a much cleaner and understanding for the ending and it left me wondering exactly what it meant which to me was disappointing because I am one who enjoys knowing what exactly happens in the end. There are other books following so this helps to clarify some of it but still left me wanting more...
This was a gripping exciting story that moved along, filled with interesting characters and their emotions. Really liked the way it flip flopped between a brother and sister and their adventures. Definitely never boring! It was an intricate plot with rich descriptions. Lots of action! I could have read more so if the author would like to expand the secondary characters even more, it would simply add to the book and not detract from it. It is fast paced and very exciting. I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series! Highly recommend it!
This book is awesome! Such a unique plot. 1800s, teenage spies, politics, assassins, balls, picnics, horseback rides, hand-to-hand combat, horseback combat, a shoot-out, disguises, romance, intrigue... Yeah! All in one book!
This book has so many plot twists, disguises, secret identities, and surprises that I never knew what was going to happen. And sometimes, I didn't even know who was who!
I look forward to reading book two, The Charleston Chase, along with the rest of the series when it comes out )
I don't read a lot of books that are described as Historical anything. But with 'Phantoms in Philadelphia', I was thoroughly intrigued. The language used in the early 1800's usually confuses me, but I actually understood the dialog. The storyline was unique and it pulled me in from the beginning. The action, secrecy, suspense, mystery and thrills were awesome. I loved the twists. I was quite surprised. Well written. The characters were great. Bess and Jack were great. With the cliffhanger ending, I have to read the next book. A great read.
This is an intriguing book of time of Revolutionary War and after, superstitions, acting, lies, romance and action. Many stories have been told about Holy Order, and artifacts that have magic power. Great character development, sometimes the switch to I with brother and sister narration is confusing though, have ordered next book as ends as cliff hangar.
What an amazing story debuting a new series. Centered around two siblings, this story is full of espionage, intrigue, with a good dose of secret societies. Both will deal with being spies in a post-war world, and they still wonder who can they trust and would that trust cause their own fall?

The characters are so personable, even as spies. I couldn't help but feel for both Bess and Jack, willing them to win, even against the odds they face. With the clever ploy of masks, Amalie Vantana brings their world to life in a fun way. I was so enthralled that I could not put the book down, and cannot wait to read more.
